About Us

Launched in January 2026, Protocol is an Australian youth-led technology policy lab.

Our mission is to empower university students and young people to help shape the national conversation on technology policy in Australia, through our events, publications and Policy Research Program.

Protocol engages with some of the most pressing issues at the intersection of technology and society, including AI safety, the environmental impact of AI, cybersecurity, privacy, and quantum innovation.

We believe Protocol’s unique interdisciplinary, youth-led perspective will play a critical role in helping Australia understand and respond to the societal impacts of emerging technologies.

Protocol's Branches

Engagement

Our Engagement Branch organises public events that promote learning, discussion, and engagement with Australian technology policy, including panels, guest lectures, and symposiums

Research

Our Research Branch provides university students with the opportunity to conduct in-depth research on an area of interest within Australian technology policy through the Policy Research Program

Advocacy

Our Advocacy Branch engages with policymakers, industry, and the public to translate our research into meaningful real-world impact

Operations

Our Operations Branch supports the work of all Protocol branches by overseeing governance, financial management, communications, and social media

Our Founding Committee

Protocol’s Founding Committee is comprised of students from four universities across Sydney and Brisbane, bringing together diverse academic backgrounds including law, computer science, engineering, and economics.

While each member is passionate about different aspects of technology policy, we share a common vision of ensuring technology is developed for the public good.
